It’s the holiday season and you know what that means– people are packing on some extra pounds as they eat turkey and fixings, along with cookies and cakes. That said, there’s a way to improve your health that’s both fun and challenging, and it’s hunting.
Sure, you could walk on your local street for exercise, but what about walking on hunting land, searching for that one animal you want to shoot? That gives your walk– your exercise– a purpose. And it makes the day go by faster because you’re in pursuit of something– an “award/reward” if you will.
Hunting Has Numerous Health Benefits
Hunting is good for your health because it gets you off the couch, away from the TV/phone, and moving your body. Plus, you’re outside, in nature, breathing hopefully clean air while you briskly carry some gear in search of an elusive animal. The terrain might be uneven, which means you’re really using your quadriceps and hamstrings and leg muscles to go up, down and around all sorts of obstacles in your way. Your heart is pumping faster and you’re sweating– this is good!
If you’re a hunter, you’re probably not the kind of person who is going to do Jazzercise classes at the local Y, but you do want to get some moderate to vigorous aerobic activity in your life, and hunting is your particular outdoorsy way to do so.
Physically, hunting can involve prepping blinds or traps, as well as equipment. There’s bending, squatting, stretching, and balancing involved, right? And it takes strength and stamina to go on a hunt. Don’t forget the mental workout you get, too, knowing rules, guidelines, figuring out distances, making educated guesses where animals could be, shooting guns, etc.
A lot of hunters appreciate hunting because it helps them relieve stress. It’s like a natural antidepressant, helping to lower blood pressure. If done with friends and family, there’s the camaraderie of experiencing the hunt communally.
All in all, if you like hunting, do more of it– it’s good for your health.
